Ice Arrow
A shard of frozen intent, hurled with the cold precision of a winter's bite.
Ice Arrow is a Water-element Star Art from the original Suikoden (1997, PlayStation), one of the special attacks that recruitable Stars can unleash in battle. It hurls a concentrated bolt of glacial energy at an enemy target, dealing elemental ice damage that can exploit vulnerabilities in foes resistant to other elements. As one of the more accessible Star Arts in the game's roster, it serves as an early introduction to the elemental combat system that defines the series.

Lore & Background
In the world of Suikoden, Star Arts are the crystallized expressions of a Star's inner power, channeled through the ancient system of elemental magic that underpins the land's spiritual architecture. Ice Arrow belongs to the Water lineage of these arts, representing the freezing, stilling aspect of that element. Where fire burns and wind tears, ice locks and shatters, and Ice Arrow embodies that principle in its most focused, directed form: a single piercing projectile rather than a sweeping wave.
In Their Own Story
The rain had turned the mountain pass into a grey river of mud. Kain's squad pressed forward through the mist, shields raised, when the enemy archers released a volley that pinned them against the cliff face. One of the Stars, a young woman with ink-stained fingers and a look of quiet irritation, raised a single hand. The air around her clenched. Frost crept up her sleeve, her breath fogging in the sudden cold. She flicked her wrist, and a spear of blue-white ice screamed out of the mist, punching clean through two archers and the wooden tower behind them. The rain hit the frozen bolt and shattered into a thousand tiny diamonds that glittered and fell. She lowered her hand, already turning back to the column. "Move," she said, as if she'd merely brushed a fly from her cheek.
Reader's Guide
Ice Arrow is a Water-element Star Art that deals ice-type damage to an enemy target. In Suikoden I, Star Arts are activated from the battle menu and consume a portion of the user's SP (special points) gauge. Ice Arrow is a single-target or limited-area attack, making it a focused tool rather than a crowd-clearing one.
The art is learned passively as a character levels up; no item, quest, or special condition is required beyond reaching the appropriate level threshold. Because many recruitable Stars acquire it, it appears frequently across different party compositions, especially in the mid-game when players are building out their rosters.
Tactically, Ice Arrow shines against enemies with a weakness to ice or Water-element damage. Pairing it with a party that also carries Fire or Wind arts gives you flexibility in the field. It is not the highest-damage Star Art in the game, but its early availability and low SP cost make it a dependable option before your Stars unlock their more powerful techniques.
Story-wise, Ice Arrow does not gate any specific plot event, but its presence in a character's repertoire is a small narrative beat: it signals that a Star has begun to tap into the deeper wells of elemental power that the Suikoden world's spiritual system provides.
Did You Know?
- Ice Arrow is one of the many Star Arts available across the 108 recruitable Stars in Suikoden I, meaning it can appear in a wide variety of party compositions.
- The Star Arts system in Suikoden I is organized by elemental lineage, and Ice Arrow sits firmly in the Water element's freezing sub-category, distinct from the game's Fire, Wind, Earth, Light, and Dark arts.
- Because it is learned simply by leveling up, Ice Arrow is often one of the first Star Arts a newly recruited Star unlocks, serving as an on-ramp to the game's special-attack system.
- The Suikoden franchise's emphasis on elemental variety means that Ice Arrow's ice damage can exploit specific enemy weaknesses, rewarding players who check and adapt to each foe's affinities.
