Warriors who have mastered it describe the sensation as the air going still for one heartbeat, followed by a blinding white-blue flash and the smell of ozone.

The Star Art instructor, a weathered old man who travels between villages and taverns, teaches these techniques to anyone who has proven their worth by collecting the scattered medals. "You feel that?" the old man's voice came from somewhere behind him, calm as a man commenting on the weather.

Karna turned. The Star Art instructor stood at the edge of the treeline, leaning on his staff, watching the sky with half-lidded eyes. "The storm is still up there. It just hasn't decided where to land."

He tapped the staff once. The clouds above the Imperial column shuddered. A single thread of white-blue light stitched down from the overcast, silent, and struck the lead standard-bearer's shield. The metal rang like a bell. The soldier dropped.

"Thunder Bolt," the old man said, as if naming a dish at a tavern. "One medal, one lesson. The rest is your own hands."

He turned and walked back into the trees, leaving Karna alone with the smell of ozone and the sound of a hundred soldiers breaking formation.
